The Solar Weight
Standard

Not every season on the Gulf calls for the same shirt. One number to go by — four, five or six — so you dress for the year instead of guessing at it.

Know your weight. Choose your day.

Reading the calendar…

The chart

One year, three weights

Every weight owns a stretch of the calendar. The band below is the year itself — cool at both ends, white-hot through the middle, gold on the way in and out. Your weight is whatever the year is doing above it.

JanFeb MarApr MayJun JulAug SepOct NovDec

Light shows up twice — spring and fall. That is not a mistake. It is the one you reach for on both ends of the year.

The scale

Four, five, six

One number, and it is the only number we ask you to learn. Lower is airier. Higher has more to it. There is no wrong end of this scale — there is only the season you are dressing for.

Tier 01 / 03

Feather

4OZ
The season
Summer — the stretch that does not let up after dark.
The cloth
4.5 oz per square yard.
Feel
Barely there. Moves air. Sits on you without asking anything.
Reach for it
When the forecast has no mercy in it and you are going out anyway.
Tier 02 / 03

Light

5OZ
The season
Spring and fall — the longest stretch of the year here.
The cloth
5.3 oz per square yard.
Feel
Enough to look sharp. Enough to forget you have it on.
Reach for it
If you are only picking one — this is the one.
Tier 03 / 03

Heavy

6OZ
The season
Winter — which on this coast means cool, not cold.
The cloth
6.0 oz per square yard.
Feel
Structured. Holds its shape. Sits like it means it.
Reach for it
The cool months, and any time you just want the substantial one.

Four, five and six name the tiers. The cloth they are cut from weighs 4.5, 5.3 and 6.0 — the same way a 4/3 wetsuit is a system and not a caliper reading. We print both, so you always know exactly what you are buying.

The second number

Weight and UPF

Two different questions, and they do not answer each other. Weight tells you when to wear it. UPF tells you how long you can stay out in it. Our UV Active pieces carry both.

Solar Weight

When do I wear this?

Four, five or six. The season picks the number, and the number picks the shirt. This is the one you use every morning.

UPF

How long can I stay out?

A rated fabric — measured, not claimed. UPF 50 blocks 98% of what comes down. On our UV Active long sleeves that is the whole point of the piece.

UPF 50 — 98% blocked

Why it is built this way

One design. All three.

A design is never assigned to a weight here. Every one of them runs the whole ladder, which means the piece you like is already waiting in the weight your year calls for. Pick the art first. Pick the season second.

Tees and Hoodies both carry a Solar Weight tier. A Hoodie runs its own numbers — a 4 oz Hoodie and a 4 oz tee are not the same garment — but the three names mean the same three jobs on every piece we make. The name is the promise. The number belongs to the garment.

This is how you wear the coast

Not every season on the Gulf calls for the same shirt. Now you have a way to say so.
